theatre of cruelty xv: music and poetry v
a bonus newsletter! Where I meander away from music and into philosophy, sorry
[As I am responding to a straightforward question about intervention, harm, cancel culture, and direct action outside my gig at Nublu in New York this past weekend by ranting about Aristotelian virtue ethics for twenty minutes]
Adorable zoomer audience member: What, are you a philosopher?
Me: Yes!
AZAM: Condolences.
In September, I wasn’t able to deliver a full two issues of theatre of cruelty because I went on vacation and lost all my meds and also my wallet and also my mind, so here’s a bonus one this month for your perusing pleasure.
In terms of readings and public performances: I don’t have much coming up as of right now! There are a few exciting weird things brewing, but I’m focusing on wrapping up come contracts in the next month and then I’m going into another Winter of Rest and Relaxation in which I wear sweatpants, make international peasant foods, hang out with my dog, and write a book — like I did last winter. Last winter I had EI and this winter I’ve just got a weekly babysitting gig, my savings, and this substack, so please donate so I don’t have to get a job at Subway or something (I’m not smart or hardworking enough to work there, I have worked there twice and have twice come away with the distinct impression that Subway is too good for me):
Substack is currently paying about 10% of my monthly business expenses, which is unbelievably amazing! As of today, I lock up some of the archive — which means new free subscribers would have to become paid subscribers if they wanna read super far back. Subscribers also get commenting privileges, a few extra articles here and there, and my eternal love and devotion.
Here’s more of the serialized writing project I’m working on, which started off inspired by Jay Z and Kanye West and has since flown completely off the rails! You can read part one here, part two here, part three here, and part four here. I’m calling it Jigga: the collected poems. This time, it has manifested section titles. Don’t worry that they’re not in the other sections. Shhh.
